Peter Muzyka's
painting of a north Georgia mountain stream is one of his larger egg tempera works on panel. In painting this piece, Peter was attempting to show the biginning stages of a flwing river with the various forest landscape elements that are found in the Georgia mountains. Working in multiple translucent layers, Peter was able to show the dept of a pool of water as well as the reflective surface and the churning white of the fast moving upper stream. The woods are filled with greenery and dead leaves and the rocks lining the stream compliment and frame the flowing water.
The egg tempera
technique gave the images of the trees, rocks, and water the quality that make it come alive. Egg tempera has
a translucent quality that lets the depth of water
show while letting reflective surfaces carry the imagery that are shown there. Peter's gessoed panels are hand prepared with many
hours of work coating all siides and sanding the gesso to provide a
slightly porous
surface to receive the egg medium. The wood panel that Muzyka uses is
most often birch cabinate grade plywood either in 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch
thickness.
